If you are unfortunate enough to be involved in a road traffic accident then we hope these helpful hints will prove useful to know what action to take at the scene.
- Take photos of all vehicles involved, registration numbers and a picture of the layout of the road if possible. Carry a camera, most people these days have a camera facility on their mobile phone. However if you don’t have such a phone it is a good idea to keep a disposable camera in your glove box – just in case.
- Keep a pen and paper in the car
- Obtain contact details of the driver, passengers and any pedestrians (address and contact numbers). Making notes of the description of the people involved can prove useful later.
- All details of the car’ registration, make, colour, model, any pre-existing damage.
- Obtain, if possible the other driver’s insurance details at the scene
- If the police attend the accident make sure you obtain the police officer’s details, this will make it easier to obtain any police report at a later date.
- Make sure you know the name of the road where the accident happened.
- Make a note of the weather conditions on the day.
- Inform your own insurance company straight away and provide them with a sketch plan of how the accident happened.

Last but not least remember it is your choice as to who you instruct to deal with your claim. You will be inundated with offers to act for you if you are unfortunate to be involved in a motor accident. Every Tom Dick and Harry will be phoning you to offer you their services. Most of these people are intermediaries seeking to make money themselves from selling your claim on to someone else. You are being used as a commodity. Instruct someone you know and trust or at least someone you yourself have chosen to be your advisor.
