It has been announced today that the Secretary of State for Justice, Sir Kenneth Clarke, has asked his department to devise a law that will save property owners from having to bring civil proceedings against squatters. Currently squatters may legally enter an empty property provided that they do not cause damage when gaining access. Under the Government proposals police will be empowered to seize buildings and bring criminal charges against such individuals, who will face jail.
In addition the Department for Communities and Local Government have issued guidance to homeowners of their rights where their property has been unlawfully occupied.
