Grounds for Divorce

Divorce is a highly complicated area of UK family law, and it is therefore important that you consult a qualified solicitor prior to entering proceedings. If you are considering separating from your partner, the first thing you will need to do is decide whether you can prove one of the five grounds for divorce:

• Your husband or wife has committed adultery and you find it intolerable to live with them


• Your husband or wife has behaved in such a manner that you cannot be reasonably expected to live with them


• You have lived apart for two years and you both agree to there being a divorce


• Your husband or wife has deserted you for a period of two years or more


• You have lived apart for five years or more - a divorce can be secured whether your husband or wife agrees to there being a divorce or not

The Proceedings

The entire process takes approximately four to six months, although in the majority of cases twelve months is a more accurate estimation, once financial concerns are taken into account.
