What causes industrial dermatitis?

Industrial dermatitis - also known as occupational dermatitis - is caused by coming into contact with an allergen or an irritating substance, such as:

  • Petrol
  • Diesel
  • Soaps
  • Detergents
  • Oils
  • Grease
  • Chemicals

Irritants can be chemical, biological, mechanical or physical. In some cases, even prolonged exposure to water can cause skin problems for some individuals.

All employees who come into contact with these types of substances should be given protective equipment for working with hazardous materials. However, if you were not - or the protection you were given was not suitable - you could be entitled to claim compensation.

What are the symptoms of industrial dermatitis?

Physical symptoms of the condition include:

  • Redness
  • Scaling/flaking
  • Blistering
  • Weeping
  • Cracking
  • Swelling

Sufferers of dermatitis are likely to experience symptoms of itching and pain, which in many cases can be so severe that they are unable to continue with their job.

Who is at risk?

Anyone who regularly comes into contact with potential irritants is at risk of developing work-related dermatitis. This could be a hairdresser working with hair and beauty products, cleaners working with industrial-strength cleaning solutions or factory workers who are required to handle harmful chemicals.

How easy is it to make a claim?

At Percy Hughes & Roberts Solicitors, we make it as easy as possible for our clients to claim the compensation they deserve for industrial dermatitis. A member of our industrial disease team will keep you updated on the progress of your claim and negotiate a fair settlement on your behalf.

We understand the difficulty many people experience when making the decision to launch a claim against a current or former employer, so we look to make the process as simple or stress-free as possible.
