Grievance Procedures Advice

It is always disappointing when a member of staff has a grievance with you or the company that they feel they must escalate to a formal procedure, however it does happen. For those unfortunate situations, you must have up to date policies in place to deal with them.

Your Responsibilities

All employers must have these procedures writing somewhere they can easily be seen by members of staff – such as in the employee handbook, company intranet, etc.
This must also tell the employees who they need to contact in order to raise their grievance.
The general procedure for grievances is as follows:

  • The individual in question will write a formal letter which will outline their issues and why they are undertaking this procedure.
  • Following this, a date must be decided for a meeting at which you will discuss the issues, and you will then come to a decision on how to handle the issue
  • Your employee will then have a set amount of time in which to appeal your decision.

Our employment solicitors are on hand to ensure that you initially have the correct policies in place to deal with potentially difficult situations, and then they will advise you throughout any cases that are pursued against you.
