About bullying and harassment

Bullying and harassment counts as any unwanted behaviour that makes someone feel intimidated, degraded, humiliated or offended. It is not always obvious to other people, and it often takes place in the workplace without the employer’s awareness.

It can be between two individuals, or between groups of people, and can be persistent or an isolated incident. It does not always happen face to face, and can be carried out through written communications, by phone, online or through email.

According to the Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service (Acas), the definitions of bullying and harassment are as follows:

Bullying: ‘Offensive, intimidating, malicious or insulting behaviour, an abuse or misuse of power through means that undermine, humiliate, denigrate or injure the recipient.’

Harassment: ‘Unwanted conduct related to a relevant protected characteristic, which has the purpose or effect of violating an individual’s dignity or creating an intimidating, hostile, degrading, humiliating or offensive environment for that individual.’

While bullying usually takes place between two colleagues and the employer steps in to resolve the situation, in some cases, the employers themselves can receive this type of accusation. It is important to act quickly in order to refute these claims.
